Top Looks from PFW

Finally had time this weekend to really hone in on Paris properly, narrow down my favourite looks and generally relive some of the best of S/S 2014.

Marc J's swan song at Louis Vuitton was clearly a highlight and on top of the spectacle of the show itself,  I really loved the collection. Teaming ornate Victoriana with loose, low-rise denim and biker jackets was the kind of dressing-down I could instantly get on board with. Elsewhere, there were surprises in store as age-old favourites like Isabel Marant and Stella McCartney failed to impress quite as much as usual (blasphemy I know), while the likes of Claire Wright Keller at Chloe and Anthony Vacarello pretty much dictated how I want to dress next summer, albeit in very different ways.

So here goes. The final leg of the new season highlights as concisely as I can possibly me....

Just when we all thought we knew what we were getting from Phoebe Philo, she took Celine in a totally new direction this season, successfully giving the finger to her reputation for the queen of minimalism. I can't see myself jumping on board with the primary-coloured paint strokes (even if Philo doth say we should) but the fringed hemlines, lace-ups sandals, ethnic jewellery and netting skirts are all takeaways I'm already excited about.

Loved the African-Asian influences at Givenchy and the finale look on Joan Smalls finished it all off perfectly - the pleated satin coat was pure drama while the flat, 'fugly' sandals kept it real and cool.

Sweet, simple and a little bit Lolita, I loved this retro-feeling suede look at Vanessa Bruno - can imagine Lux from The Virgin Suicides wearing this for a date with Trip....

Okay, okay - I know I sort-of-dissed Marant in my opening paragraph but lets be honest, there's always a wealth of covetable pieces up for grabs at Isabel Marant... I think it was just those lacy, ruffled bra tops that turned me off. Or indeed the abundance of ruffles full stop. But the simpler, tougher looks that saw those pretty, sheer lace tops beefed up with leather and sporty separates were just as good as ever.

Perhaps my favourite collection of Paris (big statement), Claire Wright Keller really stepped up her game this season with the most perfect summer-in-the-city silhouettes at Chloe, all of which moved in the most easy-breezy elegant way.

Always offering a lesson in how to do sexy without clingy fabrics and cleavage, Anthony Vaccarello makes a simple shirt, shorts and sandals combo the ultimate come hither look women actually want to wear. Maybe Anja Rubik has something to with that too....

Have a feeling Bermuda boy shorts are going to be something of an obsession next summer and I love these slinky, silk ones at Dries Van Noten. The same goes for the loose, easy separates and ethnic details that immediately caught my eye at Dries.

My favourite Louis Vuitton look - decadence and showgirl drama finished of with blue denim and leather loafers. A marriage of opposites that worked perfectly. We'll miss you Marc... now just hurry up and tell us who's next LV.

Beautiful tribal opulence at Valentino - I liked how the warrior princess vibe of so many of the dresses gave an injection of strength to all the feminine detail.

Nautical gets the Acne treatment... and you all know I like my stripes. Once again with the baggy Bermudas and somehow I get the feeling clumpy Geisha sandals are going to be nest summer's Birkenstock.

For me, Stella failed to wow quite as much as normal this season - the cuts of those nightie-esque slips just didn't sit that well with me. But the affirmation of navy for summer and silk suiting was a look I immediately wanted to replicate. On that note, I need to own a matching two-piece suit before too long....

Top 10 (sort of) looks from NYFW

Instead of flagging up entire collections, I thought I'd go against my entire being and be really concise this season so I've done my best to pinpoint my favourite looks instead. Hence why I've left it a little longer -  it's always nice to combine a bit of gut reaction with some afterthought I think.

Definitely not in order of preference, nor the only looks I could have picked - it would have been easier to do top 50 for sure - but they're the looks I'd actually wear or, more realistically, subconsciously end up drawing on when getting dressed next summer.  Even if it's just doing up a shirt (case in point Wang below) or having a certain theme in the back of your mind (Marc Jacobs' 19th century Coney Island could be an interesting one).

Full disclosure. There's 13 looks, not 10. I tried.

I'm constantly adding looks to my Catwalks & Collections Pinterest board so have a look-see for updates as the shows happen.

Wasn't this everyone's favourite? Wang gives us a whole new way to button up (or not as the case may be) and gives us a good excuse for not getting dressed in the morning.

Love the frayed denim - reminds me on London-based Genius's Marques'Almeida. Plus long relaxed coats over casual shorts is a silhouette I'm always fond of. I loved the whole collection in fact - so easy and effortless. Which is exactly why I had to put the 2nd image in at the last minute!

Such a slinky, sexy fabric but the draping keeps takes it elegant rather than trashy.  Silvery spaghetti straps always do it for me too.  Really can't wait to see someone wearing this on the red carpet - Kate Bosworth would do this proud.

A big yes to monochrome gingham for next summer. Loving the matching head wrap too.

Just taking lots of notes from this easy-as-they-come ensemble; the collarless shirt, the cropped flares and shoelace-strap sandals.

Marc Jacobs has that amazing knack of showing us next season's silhouette before we even knew it existed, let alone wanted to wear it. These low-slung bermudas combined with the boxy, embroidered jacket was something of a revelation.  Who knew opulent Victoriana and streetwear would prove such a cool, wearable mix? Jacobs strikes again with his own version of the Dickensian Z-boys.

Clean, minimal and finished off with the perfect mule. Tibi gives a lesson in effortless summer dressing. And that skirt even makes me tempted by a print.

I tried so hard to pick just one Proenza look but in the end I decided I'd leave that tricky task for someone a little more decisive than I.  The shirtless suiting, the bandage crop-tops, the lurex and mettallic pleating... there was so much to love from Proenza Schouler's collection.

This was another collection I really struggled to narrow down. I'm not sure how long this 90s revival is going to run, but I sense it's here to linger for a little longer and Olivier Theyskens clearly thinks so too.

And finally, the perfect teeny-tiny white dress from Narciso Rodriquez that reminded me too much of Cher's Calvin Klein LWD in Clueless not to include.

Kane Close-Ups

The inimitable Christopher Kane has done it again.

Clearly feeling confident, and rightly so after his recently signed deal with PPR, Kane ticked all the boxes with his A/W 2013 collection. Admittedly it took a few once-overs to take it all in (60 looks made for a pretty meaty collection), but it pretty quickly became one of those stand-out shows that just keeps on giving in terms of detail and technical precision.

And while the camouflage kilts and fur coats are seriously covetable thanks to Kanes wearable breed of cool, I think its when you get a little closer that those intricate details really come into their own. Take the undone loop-stitch seams on the velvet pieces for example. So perfect in their imperfection you wonder why you ever wanted a dress that didnt fall open at the seams.
